The Idaho State Board of Pharmacy has several requirements for pharmacy technicians. According to the official Idaho BOP website, the Board requires certification through PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) or ExCPT (Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians), in addition to registration with the Board. Registration requirements are as follows:

CERTIFIED PHARMACY TECHNICIAN REGISTRATION.

To be approved for registration as a certified pharmacy technician, a person must satisfy the following requirements: (3-21-12)

01. Age. Be at least eighteen (18) years of age unless a waiver is granted by the Board’s executive director; (3-21-12)

02. Education. Be a high school graduate or the recipient of a high school equivalency diploma unless a waiver is granted by the Board’s executive director; (3-21-12)

03. Personal Characteristics. Be of good moral character and temperate habits; and (3-21-12)

04. Certification. Have obtained and maintained certified pharmacy technician (CPhT) status through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), the Institute for Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT), or their successors unless qualified for a continuous employment exemption. (3-21-12)

While these minimum requirements will satisfy the Board, they may not be enough for some employer’s. Many top companies prefer candidates with a certificate of completion from an accredited post-secondary program or a degree. Fortunately, Idaho is home to several schools that offer top-tier certificate, associate, and even bachelor degree programs that can help make you more attractive to potential employers.

In addition, a certificate of completion or a degree from an accredited school will help place you ahead of the pack when it comes to promotions and other advancement opportunities and pay increases. The accredited schools below offer some of the state’s most popular pharmacy technician programs. Keep in mind that training programs are also offered at learning centers, corporations, hospitals, clinics, military schools, and career colleges. If you choose this route, just check to make sure the programs are Board approved.
